Kurt Mussina discusses where scale creates real value in clinical research — and why footprint alone is not the measure that matters most.
Published by Applied Clinical Trials
Scale and consolidation were recurring themes at the 2026 SCRS Global Site Solutions Summit. In a second interview with Applied Clinical Trials, Paradigm Clinical Research CEO Kurt Mussina discusses what scale should ultimately mean for sponsors, CROs and study performance.
Mussina acknowledges the operational efficiencies that can come from working with larger site organizations, particularly when sponsors can reduce the number of separate organizations required to execute a multisite study. At the same time, he argues that footprint and location count remain secondary to a more fundamental measure of site capability: access to the right patients and the ability to enroll and retain them.
For sponsors evaluating scaled site organizations, the conversation therefore extends beyond how many locations an organization owns to what that scale actually enables it to deliver.
The interview covers:
- Where scale can create meaningful operational efficiencies for sponsors and CROs
- Why consolidation does not necessarily mean concentrating an entire study within one organization
- The continued importance of geographic reach and access to underserved markets
- Why patient access, enrollment and retention remain fundamental measures of site performance
- How sponsors can think differently about scale when evaluating site organizations
